Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is the leading charitable funder and advocate of type 1 (juvenile) diabetes research in the world. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease which strikes children suddenly and requires multiple injections of insulin daily or a continuous infusion of insulin through a pump. Insulin, however, is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke and amputation.

Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has focused on the mission of finding a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. JDRF has funded more than $1.16 billion in diabetes research, including more than $137 million in FY2007. In FY2007, JDRF funded 700 centers, grants and fellowships in 20 countries.

Rating agencies and the media consistently point to JDRF’s efficiency and effectiveness as a charitable organization. JDRF annually receives top rankings from independent sources that rate nonprofit organizations; most recently, Charity Navigator—the leading online rating service for charities—awarded JDRF its highest rating: four stars.

Sadly, the number of children with type 1 diabetes is growing. Each year, more than 15,000 children and teenagers are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in the U.S. That’s more than 40 per day. The vast majority of children diagnosed with any form of diabetes are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

The Orange County chapter was founded in 1980 to support the JDRF International in its quest to fund the best diabetes research around the world. In the year ending June 30, 2007, the JDRF Orange County chapter raised $4 million toward that $137 million raised in FY2007, primarily through its core events—the Walk to Cure Diabetes, Dream Gala and “Fore the Kids” Golf Classic—and through major gifts, tributes and memorials.

JDRF Orange County chapter in fiscal year 2007 ending June 30, 2007, earned distinction in the following categories: Out of 80 chapters, Orange County ranked #5 in gross and net revenue, having raised more than $4 million this last year to directly support research to find a cure for diabetes. Our Dream Gala ranks fourth (among JDRF chapters) overall in gross and net revenue, with more than $2.3 million in gross revenue. This is said to have been the highest-netting gala in Orange County in 2007. The JDRF Orange County chapter ranked #1 in income among chapters of similar demographic area and income potential. Our “Fore the Kids” Golf Classic also ranks among the top-netting golf tournaments in Orange County year after year, and this year the Golf Classic netted more than $200,000!

JDRF Orange County remains strong and successful with the dedication of hundreds of volunteers, an active board of 47 directors led by Board President Marshall Laitsch, and a staff of five, which includes Louise C. Cummings, Executive Director; Donna Mogilski, Associate Executive Director; Jennifer Garner, Special Events Director; Ali Galkin, Special Events Manager; and Luke Plubell, Administrative Assistant. The chapter also has the good fortune of having Michelle Popoff as Outreach Manager.
